Actually, from a legal perspective this goes far, far beyond women, contraceptives, or even religion.

I’ve heard the “They’re a bunch of idiots” rebuttal and I honestly wish that were true because the truth is far more insidious. Let me make something clear; the men who ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby aren’t idiots, they knew exactly what they were doing.

And what they were doing is handing a legal loophole to businesses to circumvent the ACA by reason of moral and religious objection.

Under this precedent, ANY coverage that might otherwise be mandated by law can be challenged on moral and religious grounds.)Unwed mother? Having a child out of wedlock is a SIN, so sayeth the bible. No maternity insurance for you.)  Does that mean they’ll all win? No, but expect a flood of petitions from businesses and corporations twisting themselves into legal summersaults to strip as much coverage from workers as they possibly can.

So, to be clear, what happened today was not just an attack on women, though it was certainly that too. It was also a branch of the law that is supposed to be a neutral arbitrator (judicial) deliberately undermining the laws they are supposed to be protecting (the ACA) for their own political agenda, and using religion as a Trojan horse in order to circumvent laws they don’t like.

Which, you know,  is exactly the opposite of what the judiciary is supposed to do.
