Whoa, that episode of Last Airbender reminded me so much of the Fanfiction episode of Supernatural. ;o Totally, especially the part where it hinted at subtext tween Katarra and Aang and they were totes endgame. Ughughughugh Destieeeeeeeeeel

Well actually, what’s interesting about Ember Island Players and Fan Fiction (as in SPN 10×05) is that there isn’t (as far as we the audience see) any Kataang or Destiel within the text of the play/musical. In fact, in EIP, Kataang as a romantic couple is explicitly denied, and the fanon ship, Zutara, is explored. Instead, the possibility of romance between Katara and Aang is explicitly discussed in the real world, between acts of the play, as the two of them grapple with their feelings for each other right before facing the Big Bad.

We get something fairly similar in Fan Fiction; we see one ship (Wincest) within the text/subtext of the meta fictional production. We also know that there is some subtextual Destiel component discussed in part of the musical, though we never see it; the big, important mention of the Destiel is in the real world of SPN. He not only sees Kristen and Siobhan, he also questions whether that dynamic between Dean and Cas is in the musical and talks to Sam about it, which is something that doesn’t happen with the Wincest moment. This indicates to the audience that Destiel is something that Dean has thought about/is thinking about/is not limited to the musical.

So, we are given clues that Destiel does in fact exist within in the context of the real world of the show, much like how Kataang exists in the real world of Avatar (and eventually becomes endgame).
