I went and dug up the synopsis for 8.23 in the hope of getting us all a good laugh and maybe help some of my peeps calm down. That’s you. You’re my peeps.

WHAT MUST SAM, DEAN AND CASTIEL SACRIFICE TO FOREVER SEAL HELL? — With
Crowley (guest star Mark Sheppard) poised to undo all the good they’ve
ever done as hunters, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles)
find themselves cornered. But with Kevin’s (guest star Osric Chau) help,
the Winchester brothers bound into one last play against The Demon
King. Metatron (guest star Curtis Armstrong) initiates a plan with
Castiel (Misha Collins) to take on Naomi (guest star Amanda Tapping) and
the bureaucracy of Heaven. Alaina Huffman and Kim Rhodes also guest
star. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver. (x)

Lol Crowley mildly annoys the boys for the first ten minutes, spends the rest of the episode tied to a chair referencing David Bowie, getting punched by Abaddon, and talking about love with Moose. In the end, Dean and Sam “find themselves cornered” much more because of the issue with the trials than because of Crowley, hence the brothers’ church scene. “One last play against the demon king” literally he’s just crying on a chair and ends up being powerless and used to try and complete the trials. “Plan to take on Naomi” is actually Metatron setting Cas up so he gets him the ingredients for the angel fall spell, then taking Cas’ grace and killing a repentant Naomi. Naturally no mention of the Dean&Sam church scene, the Dean&Cas bar scene or anything that leads to that scene, because they’re the two major emotional moments of the episode. (Note that by the look of this synopsis alone, Dean and Cas don’t even interact in the episode as they are focused on two completely separate plans.)

Conclusion: ugly shit always happens in the finales, but synopses won’t tell you about the real juicy stuff/emotional climaxes of the episode, and will easily downplay this plot point, blow that other one out of proportion, grossly distort events to make it look like something is happening when in fact it’s something else completely (but sell the description as accurate), and the like. That is all : )

Alright, I found the 9×23 too so I’m adding it:

“THE SHOCKING SEASON FINALE – Dean (Jensen Ackles) feels the effects of the First Blade, and Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) makes his move against humanity. Meanwhile, Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean and Castiel (Misha Collins) face shocking consequences when taking the fight to Metatron.”

Translation: “Dean feels the effects of the blade” = water is wet; “Metatron makes his move against humanity” = true but it says nothing about Metatron’s actual plan, how anyone’s involved with that and of course how he ends up in angel prison; “Meanwhile tfw faces shocking consequences” = fire is hot

Conclusion: this one is even worse because it literally just says “things happen”. At least the other one had misleading details.

Excellent reference!

I’m sorry, I’m just laughing hysterically at “Metatron makes his move against humanity” because… well. Who did he actually lure and kill in that episode?

Yeah, exactly.
