The saddest song in Les Mis is “Red and Black”

because it ends on the triumphant note of “They will come when we caaaaaaaall”

and you know they won’t.

im sorry but its that rain song by the third party girl

Not having seen this in a while, I’m assuming you mean “On My Own” as sung by whassername playing Eponine. In which case I am going to go full on ace and wave my hands about whining about relationships vs. people dying

but then I have to be fair to Hugo and point out that Eponine whining about relationships is the whole reason Marius is on the barricade, which is why the barricade lasted through the night, and may or may not be the reason the majority of the barricade boys died.

yooo i’m on mobile and have to Pretend To Go To Bed Soon so i can’t properly say anything yet, i’m sorry /o but:

– i gotta go full on éponine stan for a minute here and contradict the idea that on my own’s sole or even main purpose is in any way to whine about relationships (i always saw it more as an emphasis on éponine’s hopelessness about the state of her life and about how she’s grown up in an environment with a scarcity of love of any kind; therefore she has little to no frame of reference for healthy relationships. thus she creates a fantasy of love and stability that she projects onto marius – a fantasy which on some level she recognizes as unrealistic, but refuses to let go of because it makes her life somewhat more worth living). okay that was a Block of Text and i feel like i should provide quotes to Explain Myself so i will see if i can do that tomorrow when i get the chance + am no longer on mobile? sorry!

– (also i think they were talking about a little fall of rain?)

Oh, absolutely, I am all over that, Eponine is definitely my favorite as well and let me be the last to say the purpose of her character is to pine after Marius, but I was assuming we were talking about the movie version where she sings On My Own in the rain (I think, it might be the goopy Marius-and-Cosette one that she sings at that point), in which case the song is entirely about relationships.

If it’s Fall of Rain, that’s a different story entirely. I’m still going to have aceity rawr rawr feelings, but there’s death involved, so my macabre leanings are satisfied. *shrugs* Bias!

oh, ok, i’ve only seen the movie the one time and my experience of the stage versions i’ve seen have been heavily influenced by my reading of the book, so there’s no way of telling if my memory of the movie performance is accurate. /o

I want to write something clever here about Eponine v Cosette, and how public opinion has almost literally swung from Cosette is Perfect Woman and Eponine is Horrible Poor Tramp to Cosette is Horrible Dull Princess Dream Girl and Eponine is Me, and what it says about us, in general, and girls and how we view them in particular.

But mostly I’m sitting here flailing with too much information in my brain and no way to spit it out.
