The best thing about all these corporations willingly retweeting and referencing Destiel is that it shows just how out of touch with social norms some of the hard-core antis really are.

First, these companies’ reps are not going to do anything that will jeopardize their bottom line, and that means only doing things that are going to bring in net customers. If they’re joking about Destiel, it’s because they are pretty sure that there are substantially more people who will support the idea or get a laugh out of it and think more positively of their brand as a result, than there are people whose image of the brand will be damaged. It’s really a big indictment of the whole idea of a “silent majority” that’s already feverishly opposed to Destiel or would be disgusted by the idea if they’re not already aware of it.

And not just in fandom–companies have to think bigger than the fraction of the country that’s actively involved in this fandom, and it suggests that these companies see playing with the idea of Destiel (on social media) as a net gain overall. It’s progressive but accessible! It shows that they’re fun and hip and “on trend” with the way being a geek is cool these days! In the case of Astroglide, joking about Destiel smut is a bit naughty and playfully transgressive and thus on-brand! (See also: The CW’s Season 7 rebrand that led to the introduction of queer character Charlie as a way of gaining viewership by exploiting their target demographic’s nationwide increased likelihood to watch shows if they featured queer characters.)

Second, I dare them to try to get companies to joke the same way about W*ncest. I dare them. Because I would bet that companies won’t bite, because you know what jokingly endorsing that would get them? Angry shareholders who are concerned that their brand is gonna get associated with framing sibling *ncest as a positive thing. This is the same reason that no serious publication is going to ever create buzz about W*ncest the way that they do for Destiel.

Reality check. And that jealousy is why they’re mad.

Didn’t something similar happen when an Olive Garden rep made a cute little joke about Dean sharing his pasta bowl with Cas and then a bibro fan got all upset and tweeted at them?

I wonder if any other companies in the coming months are going to make references to destiel and if they are, which one is next.
