Hiccup slips on his peg-leg

Smooth recovery. I kinda get the idea he had to perfect it though. emmerzk, this warrants further discussion.

I have *never* noticed that before! It was a super smooth recovery and he doesn’t make a big deal about it at all. Doesn’t interrupt her as she’s talking with a big scene to get a reaction out of her. He’s so humble and calm. She doesn’t even seem to notice it happen!

This moment never gets old to me. I love that they include these small little details in the animation. It shows a lot about Hiccup’s life. He’s learned how to handle the little inherent slips a peg leg brings. He’s adjusted and it no longer affects his mobility.

In his head he’s like “Yes Mom. Yes Mom. Wow I have a mom… whoops there I go… Yes Mom.”

This is so important and I just love how they handle Hiccup’s disability. Because there are little moments like this; little moments where he slips or stumbles or limps a little or basically where you can see his mobility affected by his pegleg, but there’s never a big deal made out of it.

I just love that they neither gloss over his disability nor make a big deal out of it. He’s had his prosthetic for five years now, so he’s learned how to cope. It’s still there; he still goes down stairs differently than everyone else. There are still moments where he slips on the grass or can’t get traction on the rock, because realistically he would always have those issues. (Same kinda thing with Gobber. His gait is different and he seems to get winded a lot more easily trying to run during battle, but it’s never made into a big thing.)

But it’s never front and center. Hiccup is a hero who is disabled, but he’s never touted as like ~disabled hero wow so inspirational~. Hiccup’s disability (and Toothless’s, and Gobber’s) are part of their identities, but those things are never made into their whole identity.

It’s just really great the balance they’ve struck. (THIS IS HOW YOU DO REPRESENTATION. FOUR FOR YOU DREAMWORKS)

Every so often this post comes back around with a new amazing analysis. I love this fandom.
