There’s one hard, fast rule in this universe. What lives…dies. 

I guess that the whole “you’re gonna die soon Sam lol” “aha here’s a cure for me lol” is foreshadowing for “here you go into the Empty” “aha we’ve found a way out lol”. A way out that I’m sure will pass through the Darkness. I expect the Darkness to be framed as the opposite of the Empty – Chaos (aka Everything) vs Void (aka Nothing). Black (all the colors as all light is absorbed) vs White (no colors as all the light is reflected).
