Also I’m really, really uncomfortable with saying that any one person can “oppress” another.

You can certainly be bigoted toward them, or behave in a way that reinforces oppressive systems, but…”oppress” is a really strong verb to apply to interpersonal relations. Systems oppress. Governments oppress. An individual person displaying bigotry toward me is not oppressing me. They are not “keep[ing] [me] in subservience and hardship”, no matter how nasty they are.

Even if it’s a person directly responsible for your existantial stability, like your boss?

Good point. I would say that individuals can oppress other individuals if they are materially responsible for them and exploit that power. But I think the material component is necessary. There has to be something tangible there, otherwise the term is way too fuzzy.

also ironically, by the current sj rules that is actually the kind of oppression that DOESN’T count BECAUSE it’s on a individual basis.

Like I remember one of the most obnoxious things I’ve ever seen is there was a politician who was poc who iirc was passing anti-immigration laws and people were arguing no, they didn’t count as racist, because “needs to be backed up with power” like????

HOW DO YOU GET MORE POWER THEN LITERALLY PASSING A LAW TO OPPRESS ANOTHER GROUP???

But no the white guy living in a trailer park yelling racist shit on the internet to his 5 follower THAT GUY has all the power instead clearly.

All of this.

Also, power is highly context-dependent. Subcultural power matters a lot too. There are certain people in my local art scene who could really make things unpleasant for me if they wanted to, despite being more oppressed on an institutional level.
