Hey I just wanted to say that I for one would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on Dean’s drunk driving and how it relates to his likely borderline personality!

My big sister got diagnosed with borderline about 1.5 years ago and it made so much sense to me. I grew up spending all my time with her but in all my life I’ve never met anyone quite like her and the diagnosis helped put some of the pieces of the puzzle in place, when it came to her more complicate ways of functioning. And I very often think about how much Dean reminds me of her, I was actually just sitting on my couch thinking about it yesterday. His relationship to Sam, and also Sam as a person, reminds me of the dynamics between me and my sister and who I am. Our relationship is constantly mirrored on the show. Which is probably why Dean is my favorite character on tv

But I am not a meta writer and I haven’t gotten into the meta way of thinking yet so of course it hadn’t dawned on me that there could be a correlation with the borderline stuff
But I find that absolutely fascinating

Also I pretty recently found your blog and I wanted to add that it’s really great, I don’t blog much myself, I’m mostly on tumblr for the reading and much of that reading, I do on your blog

First of all: thank you, I really appreciate that. It’s brave of you to share that.

But as regards Dean and borderline personality: I do think that it’s important and ought to be discussed, but I’m not sure I should be the one to do it because I am not an expert on the human psyche.

While it is a much larger discussion, I’ve offended people in the past by bringing up studies showing the statistically significant correlation (not a causal relationship) between borderline personality and bisexuality, as it is a touchy topic and it’s nigh impossible to have adult conversations about sensitive issues on this website. Let me be very clear, here: bisexuality is not the result of having borderline personality, not everyone that is borderline is bisexual and not everyone that is bisexual is borderline. According to studies, people that have borderline personality are just statistically more likely to report having a bisexual orientation, and this is not irrelevant as we deconstruct Dean Winchester – as one among many other of his characteristics.

The other thing that makes me uncomfortable discussing this topic is that at least a part of – some might argue that a very big part of – Dean Winchester’s personality is based (by proxy of a literary construct created by someone who knew him in real life) on that of a real human being that has passed away, and I don’t feel comfortable dissecting the personality of a real person for the purposes of literary analysis.

And the third thing is that it requires talking about the Dabb/Lofflin episode Sam, Interrupted that many take as evidence of the co-dependency of Sam and Dean Winchester and which I have always interpreted as giving us a false diagnosis because it was based on the assumption that they were giving false information when, in fact, they were diagnosed for telling the absolute truth about their lived experience. I have never accepted the premise that Sam and Dean are in a co-dependent/narcissistic interpersonal relationship. Dean Winchester has some very obvious markers of a PTSD induced borderline personality. Sam Winchester… should be studied for years, but would seem to display at least some characteristics of a schizoid personality.

And at the same time, we must recognize that these are fictitious and composite personalities created by dozens of people over several years.

Is it okay if I reblog this?

Sure – I was a little unsure how to tag it, so if someone wants additional warnings, let me know.

Also, if someone wants to take up the conversation on the drunk driving, reckless decisions, and Dean’s tendency to view the people in his life absolutes in the finale, please feel free.
