Animal Welfare Institute (actually supports animal rights, unlike PETA)

It’s kind of frustrating to be given a list of things not to support without being given an alternative. NBCF and AWI are quick finds, please let me know if they’re problematic. I do not think Lambda Legal is, and I know ASAN is a fantastic support run by and for autistic people.

Actually, scratch the AWI. They are against carriage horses and support the stupid Central Park ban. Ugh. I thought we’d actually found a good one.

Support your local shelter or rescue.

As a volunteer at my local animal shelter, I can definitely second that recommendation.  Act Local Think Global 🙂

If you were thinking about supporting the HSUS or the ASPCA – they are both good organizations, as far as I know, but please be aware that neither of them directly runs any animal shelters! If your local shelter has “Humane Society” in its name it is only for marketing purposes – they have no connection to HSUS.  And the ASPCA used to run the NYC shelters but they stopped because the system was so overrun that they had to euthanize animals, which is against their mission.

Again – both great orgs but they have nothing to do with your local shelter.

The HSUS is marginally, a tiny bit, a teeeny bit better than PETA. It’s run by some of the same people and involved in some of the same agendas.

For example, they are against greyhound racing altogether, which is the same absolutist issue I have with the AWI. (The greyhound as a breed would likely cease to exist or become an overbred show dog without its original purpose). The ASPCA also wants to end the sport altogether and classifies it as identical to cockfighting. (really? Come on).

These advocacy organizations are all problematic to some degree, PETA is the worst with HSUS not far behind.
