I went to a museum once, in Fukuoka. I was with a friend but she was talking to someone, and my Japanese at that stage was pretty bad (it still is, but it was a lot worse then). So I wandered away, and ended up in front of this display that had objects quite similar to this, just less…defined, shall we say? And they don’t tend to expect a lot of English speakers around Fukuoka, because very few displays had much in the way of English on them. This one did, though. It said quite concisely “we are not sure what these objects were for.” And I was staring into this glass box with a very O_o expression after reading that, and I happened to look up just as this middle-aged Japanese man reads the same thing in Japanese on the other side, and our eyes meet. We stare at each other for a moment, completely dumbstruck.

Then we burst out in hysterical laughter.

…yeah. My Japanese is still pretty bad, but in some things communication will always be universal.

I wonder if it’s made from malachite

literally my first thought: is this another malachite dildo discussion?

Another.

@sorion said these were apparently made from gold? I guess it’s possible that the gold is oxidated, but it really looks like polished stone to me.
