The scene: Sam and Dean discover that someone named Alex, ostensibly a hunter, has been working the case before them. The person they are interviewing, a relative of the victim, inquires whether they know one another. Dean claims that they do, crossing his fingers to indicate how intimately they know this Alex. Dean has never before nor after made this particular gesture with his fingers.
In the very same scene, fingers are framed as erotic objects as Gert reaches out to Sam and traces Sam’s index finger as though simulating what she would do to his nether parts. Sam’s finger and his penis are associated in this scene that follows immediately the one in which Dean crossed his fingers. Sam’s index fingers stands in for the phallus.
The very plot of the episode revolves around a ‘Hand of Glory’, the severed hand of a male sailor, regarding which Dean throws innuendo later, claiming to have received a Hand of Glory at a Thai massage parlour the other week. He associated the hand of a male sailor with a hand-job, that is.
But this is the thing: Sam and Dean did not know that Alex was not a man until later, when they run into Bela. When Dean crossed his fingers to indicate how intimately he knew Alex, he was thinking of a man. In fact, Dean looks very surprised when Sam draws the conclusion that Alex = Bela. Dean was expecting a dude.
Dean Winchester thought Alex was a dude. In the episode in which fingers = penis.
Bringing this back for the Hand of Glory discussion going around. I don’t think Dean actually had a Thai massage, I think he’s joking. Bu he’s referencing a dude’s hand with his remark, never forget.
