Yesterday, I flew over the site of the Mt Jolly fires in Eastern Washington, watching the smoke rise thickly enough to be mistaken for cloud cover at 30,000 feet. Today I hear that level 3 (get out now) and level 2 (be ready to leave) evacuation warnings have gone out to even more areas.
Between floods and fires, it’s probably a good time to remind everyone, even if you think you live somewhere stolid and safe, to get your bug-out plan in order. If someone came to your door this afternoon and said “you need to get out now,” could you? Do you have a kit ready to go?

The most basic thing I can tell people, even if you can’t prep a full kit, is to have some cash on hand, ideally in singles, fives, and tens. Don’t assume you’ll be able to hit an ATM, or that credit cards will be usable. $50 (or more) should be your ‘safety fold,’ if if you can do it.
