Indeed, it has been acknowledged that Michael Relph and Basil Dearden produced the film as an open protest against Britain’s law that being a homosexual is a criminal act—a law that has been described as “the blackmailer’s charter,” as someone says. (x)

Hollywood wouldn’t deal this openly with gays and Lesbians for at least another decade. Even then the films weren’t in any way as compassionate or even as well done articulate as this film.
