It takes a special kind of privileged asshole to complain about homeless people using public restrooms

Also the very concept of “restrooms are for paying customers” is classist bullshit that needs to be abolished! You shouldn’t have to pay money to be allowed to shit indoors!

…Okay, but… there’s more going on here than that. Usually, if you see a place saying “restrooms are for paying customers only” or making you get a key to use the restroom or kicking homeless people out of the restroom, it’s not because they are TRYING TO SUCK MONEY OUT OF YOUR EYEBALLS!!!!, it’s because there are a handful of assholes they’re trying to fend off. 

Sometimes that asshole is homeless and is being an asshole because they’re homeless. If the only place you can safely bathe yourself is a sponge bath in the bathroom at McDonalds? It’s completely understandable that you’d bathe yourself there. But if you’re taking care of your personal grooming in the handicapped stall for an hour while there’s a person in a wheelchair who needs to pee? That’s a dick move. If you’re leaving clothes or razors or used needles in the restroom when you’re taking care of yourself? That’s a dick move.   

And a lot of the time it’s even more clearcut- the asshole isn’t homeless, they’re just doing things like “getting shit and period blood all over the bathroom walls” or “jerking off in the bathroom” or “smoking/getting high in the bathroom” or “having sex in the bathroom”. None of these are things you really want people doing in a public bathroom- and if these people are just coming in to make a mess or do illegal things in your bathroom, it’s bad for your business. 

A lot of the time rules about ‘you have to pay money to shit indoors here’ are less about “we want your money because we are evil capitalists” and more “ughhhhhh, Joe Q. Random keeps coming in here to jerk off, maybe if we make it so he has to spend a dollar on our shitty burgers every time he’ll think twice about it”. 

Is it fucked up? Yeah. But it’s the tragedy of the commons at work here, not PROFIT MOTIVE!!!!!!!1!!!!! screwing everyone over.
