Don’t buy them if you plan on reading them on a PC or Mac! Or, like, probably at all.
Though this isn’t mentioned anywhere public on B&N’s website, they killed their desktop app and their read-in-browser function a while back, and no longer permit any form of downloading of ebooks off of mobile apps or Nook devices.
Also, “nook” is a dirty word now, so there’s that.
And since they’re in their death spiral, this also means that the app might disappear and take your books with you when they go under. So if you’ve bought books from them in the past and don’t have access in another format, now might be the time to think about how you’re gonna read those books when B&N suddenly closes the way Borders did.
It would be terribly wrong for me to advise B&N/Nook users to do a search on how to extract those files from your phone or ereader and convert them to an open format so you can continue to use them, since by the terms of your agreement with B&N you don’t own those files, you’re just temporarily licensed to use them. I’ll leave you to ponder the potential legal consequences of that, and the likelihood that anyone would enforce them.
(side note: aren’t they the ones who did a s&r in all their ebook files, converting the word “kindle” to “nook”? with very strange consequences for novels in which people started fires? which is fucking ridiculous but still not as bad as the times Amazon repossessed people’s copies of 1984 when there turned out to be a licensing problem with them, and also censored LGBT content on their website?)
And here is the reason why, ladies gents and everyone inbetween, why I still prefer physical books over ebooks.
Under no circumstances should you use a program like, say, Calibre to manage your ereader’s content, including downloading to and from the reader and converting between standard formats. That would be wrong.

IT’S OFFICIAL. There will be a national school walkout on March 14th. This walkout demands action to finally be taken on gun violence. No more students deserve to be gunned down because lawmakers don’t wanna do anything about it. We are the generation that’s being affected the most by these weak gun laws, and WE are the ones who should be protesting about it. One student dying because of a gunman is one too many. SPREAD THE WORD, this applies to ALL students!!

OKAY!!! REALLY QUICK CAUSE YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS!!
#1: YOUR RIGHTS DO NOT END ONCE YOU WALK INTO THE SCHOOL! You need to take a good long look at your rights and civil liberties because they will be called into question. I would strongly advise contact an ACLU representative and asking them about this so you are prepared to defend yourselves from a legal stand point because the shit is going to hit the fan and it’s going to hit it hard.
#2: DO NOT RISE OR RESPOND TO THREATS! There will be threats. They will threaten to put you in detention, call your parents, expel you, get rid of your extra curricular activities, et cetera. Anything they can to control the situation before the media gets involved or the school board. You must have solidarity within your participants, lock arms, form prayer circles, sit down and do not stand. Do whatever it takes to show a non-violent, passive approach to show that it is your intention to disrupt and draw attention to the problem without being physically confrontational.
#3: SELECT A SPEAKER! Sooner or later, camera crews are going to show up. This is where messages get mixed and it becomes very easy to loose track of your goals. Draft a short speech, under 30 seconds, and select a speaker for your school who will address the media with the concerns of the student body and the demands you have before you will return to school and your education.
#4: TAKE YOUR EDUCATION INTO YOUR OWN HANDS! This is not a chance to take advantage and get some time off school. The media WILL USE THIS as an excuse to discredit you. If you can, get teachers on board who will provide you with a curriculum that you can continue to work on from home. Do NOT GIVE UP YOUR EDUCATION! Refuse to participate in a government funded system of education which denies you basic safety.
#5: If you can, GET YOUR TEACHERS INVOLVED! Is there a teacher your trust as a group? Is there a teacher who would offer their support, voice and guidance during this walk out? Get them involved. I know it’s not fair, but teen voices are underrated and overlooked. Having an adult head the operation or at the very least being willing to speak out IN YOUR FAVOR ON CAMERA will go a long way to adding legitimacy to your cause! Remember, their lives are in danger too, and more than once a teacher has put themselves between the shooter and their students. Ask them to be a part of this if you can.
I’d change: sales at gun shows allowed, but the person purchasing must pay for a background check to be done, or provide a paper copy of a recent one.
Private sales also don’t bother me within reason, maybe limited to family and friends. No advertising on craigslist, because then you’d legally be a gun dealer, with the associated requirements.
Mind you, if you used that to get a weapon to someone who shouldn’t have one, you’d both go to jail if they were caught in possession of it.
My doggo, Ezri, who rarely barks and mostly borks.
When I got her, she’d been abused and would cower and pee at almost everything, and had been mistreated when she’d barked, so she never would. One day months after I had her she got excited on a walk and borked at a bird, and then immediately cower-peed. I had to re-teach her to bark by gathering her whole human pack and having everyone bark and howl and feed her treats and pet her till she got excited enough to join in, and then got more treats. Took a while but I was able to teach her to bork on command (and she’s gotta be excited or she just stares at me like “Sorry, the bork system needs charging”) and she’ll do it happily when she’s excited to go for a walk or upon seeing a friend, and at birds. I love her croaky borking, especially when she started off terrified of making a joyful noise.
What kind of dog is Ezri? I love her!!
I… did not expect this post to blow up this much but I am delighted at all the tags and replies and Ezri has been told the internet thinks she’s a Very Good Dog. 😀
She’s a German spitz – in the same family as keeshonds and pomeranians. She might be crossed with something else as her freckled coat, non-pointy nose, and personality are not standard for her breed (they’re usually a lot more high energy and excitable – she’s super laid back and chill). She’s a bit less fluffy than breed-standard too, mostly because she’s grown out from her spring/summer trim (not usually necessary/good for her type of coat but she gets terribly itchy otherwise). It also makes her look like a puppy of a large breed:
Ezri’s best friend is Murder Cat, who is a gentle friend to humans and Ezri, but does things to mice that would make Hannibal Lecter go “Isn’t that a bit much?”
I got Murder Cat as a kitten, and she used to try to nurse on everything when she was small. Eventually, she settled on her favourite thing to nurse on, Ezri, who has never had puppies and a little confused at first but eventually went with it. She grew out of it, but they have stayed snuggly buddies ever since.
New Years here is full of fireworks outside and Ezri gets Vry Scared. I usually set her up somewhere with a snuggly spot right by me, and Murder Cat comes and does this all night:
She goes everywhere with me in my bakfiets (cargo bike) and lets me warm my hands in her fur on cold days.
And her ears disappear if I say her name to get her attention.

Fuck, I’ll host GED classes in the damn library if it keeps kids safe. I’ll share what skill with words I have, what life experience I have, and make sure that the kids in my community come home safe and stay that way.
Remember kids: Student walk-outs and sit-in protests are incredibly effective, because it means that the system is breaking down. Their authority only goes as far as you let it.
Don’t bring weapons to protests.
Don’t bring mace or tear gas to protests.
Get bottled water, at least six bottles per person for four hours.
Pack a first aid kit. Ace bandages, band-aids, water, dried gatorade (a scoop in a bottle of water helps prevent heat stroke due to dehydration), and sunscreen.
Keep emergency contacts on all cell phones, and if possible appoint someone in the group to be the designated emergency contact caller. Their job, if shit goes south, is to run to safety and call parents, call friends, call help, not just the police.
Don’t be afraid of Juvie. Your record is expunged at 18, if the crime isn’t something like murder.
