So, I’ve been eyeballing social media for any mention of something specific from last night’s episode (11×21) and I haven’t seen it, so… I’m going to do the deed…
Destiel subtext has been getting so much highlight in the show that it’s damn near canon. But that’s just me point out the obvious (there’s a ton of meta written on all of it this season, so I’m not going to go on a roll pointing all of those out (though if you want my collection of them, I’ll make a list).
We have also seen the major laying on of the gay since 11×19. Have we not? I’m talking about, unprecedented here. We’ve had gay (non-stereotyped) husband hunters (E19), God came out as a raging Bisexual ( E20), and now (aside from this [X] and the hint that it’s Dean’s connection to Cas that hold him back from giving in to Amara)… we have a prophet named Donatello (E21).
What’s Donatello gotta do with the gay?
We know the new prophet was named after the
Italian early Renaissance sculptor Donatello (Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi), and not the Ninja Turtle (sorry Dean).
Donatello, the artist was 1) secular/non-religious (his famous religious art was commissioned work) and 2) he was also *drum roll* … GAY.
That’s right folks. Gay.
His famous sculpture of King David [X] is widely believed to have been made effeminate on purpose as a declaration of Donatello’s own orientation… though, I kinda laugh at that cause I actually believe he was rubbing it in the faces of his society and the religious institution at that time which detested homosexuality that King David… whom Jesus is from the very linage of… was either Bisexual or just flat out Gay.
That’s right folks. Gay.
Kind David was madly in love with a man named Jonathan.
If you haven’t heard of the love story between King David and Jonathan, you’re missing out. Yes, it’s in the Bible. Here, I’ll help [x].
And while I’m on David and Johnathan, here is a relationship that fundamentalists absolutely REFUSE to see as anything other than “bromance” and “brotherly-like love”, even though it’s detailed as a very distinctly non-bro love affair. Here we have a CANON telling of a LOVE STORY that naysayers turn into nothing but “brotherly love”.
Now, I don’t know about you… but that sounds sorta familiar… right?
Which… I just thought of Jensen stuttering all over a fan asking him what Cas is to Dean and fumbled out “a brother”….. anyone else seeing the correlation?
Does Jensen know about David and Johnathan?
I know I’m likely stretching there, but it sure makes my mind wonder cause Jensen’s pretty fuckin intelligent guy, he’s a Christian (but not a fundamentalist AT ALL… just a reminder… dude hangs out at a gay bar in Huston when he’s home… NOT a fundamentalist/heterosexist in the least) so he hasto have read the Bible at least a few times I’m sure… (and you can’t miss the love story… I knew David was IN LOVE with Jonathan when I first read the story at the age of 10 lol. Hell, I’m not even a Christian and I’ve read the entire Bible it at least 30 times and have 3 Bibles full of outlines and two 300 college rule paged notebooks full of Greek and Hebrew to English words and definitions… THANK YOU STRONG’S CONCORDANCE!!!!… so, SURELY he has at least once lol).
Shit, sorry. That’s me rambling… back to focusing here.
So yeah, we have that, that and well….. THAT.
Shit, I just thought of all that pro-bi (”If the writers wrote Sam/Dean as falling for a guy, we would have no problem doing it”) Jensen and Jared gave way to at Asylum 16…. or Curtis Armstrong’s coming out as a Destiel shipper during live tweeting 11×21:
He even cast them in a Moonlighting reboot lol and gave Jensen and Misha the parts of Maddie (Misha) and David (Jensen)… the accuracy of this knows no bounds… and it’s very telling LOL!
And we also have the fave Jim Michaels did on the tweet about how Destiel should become canon (just a shot of Dean and Cas’ hands clasped)….. just….
So, what’s going on here folks? Are we simply seeing a change in SPN to do legitimate representation which we have cried out for? Are we seeing the ground work for Destiel becoming blatant canon between now and the Series Finale? Are we actually seeing BOTH?!
We ALL know it’s the final countdown and while some in this fandom might not like to acknowledge it, the rest of us know…
I’ve been meaning to make a Dom!Cas/Sub!Dean rec list for awhile, but alwaysslytherinme’s request has finally spurred me to do it. So here we go!
10. Decadence, Baby Series – By: Misha_Anon – Exclusively Dom!Castiel and sub!dean (end!verse) power exchange stories.
9. Like A Thrift Store Jacket, Still Good But Used – By: Trieduntrue -Dean is a natural bottom, loves to take it up the ass like no one’s business. Problem is, he’s hung like a horse, or at least big enough he pings every guy’s secret size kink. So, Dean ends up topping even though that’s not what he wants. Enter Castiel.
8. You Are Beautiful in All Things – By: Tempusborealis – Cas wakes Dean up the best of ways. When Dean meets all his expectations and more, Cas gives him the praise he deserves.
7. Now Accelerate Hard – By: Whithertits – Dean is a hunter who did not so much fall into a D/s relationship as saunter into one without noticing.
6. Shut Your Mouth – By: Runoutofwit -Dean’s not sure how they ended up this way, but he doesn’t care. He didn’t expect this. He didn’t expect Castiel, Angel of the Lord, to be the equivalent of a hormone-ravaged teenager, and he sure as hell didn’t expect him to be an asshole about it.
5. Castiel’s Boy Series – By: DC_Derringer – Dean needs a good, strong top to fulfill his needs. Castiel is worried for his safety and takes on the role himself.
4. Dean Smith Verse – By: TamrynEradani – Dean Smith is a man of routine. Castiel takes him apart.
3. Carry On– By: TamrynEradani – When Sam gets into Stanford, Dean needs a bigger paycheck than Bobby’s garage can give him. Luckily, he knows a guy.
2. Except Thou Bless Me– By: Architeuthis – Castiel is wroth, and Dean is having a great time.
1. Keep Looking For Water – By: Anonymous – power exchange, spanking, praise, light bondage, hand-feeding.
**I love, love, love recommendations, too, so if you got any, shoot me an ask. Please, oh please?**
Not my gifs, but here’s a thing I find interesting: this framing began as an SFX cheat.
TPTB needed to depict Cas’s supernaturally abrupt method of departing a scene; either they didn’t have the budget to actually show Cas winging away, or they preferred a more subtle and suggestive approach. (Having now had an on-camera angel teleport in ‘The Vessel’, I know the subtler suggestive approach is my preference.) What they decided on was the following sequence of shots:
1) Medium shot of both Dean and Cas in the frame.
2) Closeup on Dean/camera follows Dean as he walks or turns away from Cas, cutting Cas out of the frame.
3) Wide shot of Dean alone, emphasizing the empty space where Cas used to be.
There are some slight variations in there–for example, sometimes they cut directly from a shot with Cas in it to the wide shot without Cas–but generally, this was TPTB’s decision on how to exeunt Cas. It was a budget-conscious, technically straightforward, functional way to place Cas physically in the scene/narrative.
HOWEVER. This framing has now come to be used in scenes that Castiel is not, and never was, a part of physically at all. In the last two gifs here (another example would be Dean praying to Cas in his room at the bunker at the end of ‘Remember the Titans’), the wide shot of Dean alone doesn’t depict Cas’s departure, but rather his absence. The empty space isn’t emphatic because it’s where Cas used to be, but because it’s where Cas should be. It emphasizes that Dean wants him to be there.
So, this visual technique that used to be all about locating Castiel physically has become a visual technique for locating Dean emotionally. And I think that’s nifty. 🙂
