There are posts (here and here) about how Dean must have called and texted Cas several times before the phone call in 11×01, because Dean answers with: “Where the hell are you, Cas?”, as though he had been trying to contact Cas before the call. As though he’s been worried and frustrated that Cas hasn’t picked up the phone. There’s another post that mentioned that Cas must have felt Dean’s longing. You can bet Dean prayed to Cas too. And I just want to say that headcanon is 100% backed with prior evidence.
Because every time Dean loses Cas, he either prays to or messages him excessively.
Per request. Some people asked me to re-upload it as a photoset rather than an audio post.
OLD NUMBER 7
Illustrated Lyrics of the song Old N°7 by The Devil Makes Three, inspired by Dean’s drinking problem. (Gen, can be seen as Dean/Castiel too with shipping goggles)

I was just thinking about how “where the Hell are you?”, with that inflection, is something you would only say to someone if they call you after you’ve been spending a long time trying to contact them.
and now I’m thinking about Dean dialling Cas’ number over and over when he’s driving away from that field, the car swinging a little, until finally Sam grabs the phone and does it himself. he sends Dean a little shake of his head every time Dean glances at him, which is often. and Dean tightens his hands on the steering wheel, and tries not to panic.
I’m thinking about how Dean was probably calling Cas, and worrying about him, and wanting to help him, long before before that phone conversation happened.
Can we talk about the fact that Dean always seeks privacy when Cas calls like it’s an intimate conversation no one is supposed to hear??
He literally steps away from Sam and the woman in 11×01 when Cas calls although there’s no background noise or loud talking at all.
He then starts a heart felt conversation with Cas at a save distance from the others and immediately starts talking business when Sam comes close enough to hear.
Dean, you’re in so deep.
Any other phone calls seem to go straight to speaker so that he and Sam can both talk to them. We see this with calls from Bobby, Charlie, and Kevin from earlier seasons.
It looks as if Dean wants Cas to himself for a moment before he shares him with his brother.
And how awkward was that one phone call in 9.18, when the call started out on speaker with both Dean and Sam present, and Cas suddenly breaks into their usual banter with the comment about the Honor Bar in his motel room? You can just see in Dean’s face the moment he looks at Sam and decides, “Hell with it, I’m gonna talk to Cas like Sam’s not here. Consequences be damned.”
And look how happy that makes him. And then you can kinda see Sam’s “Oh god is this how they talk when I’m not around?” face.
And then Dean clears his throat and squirms a bit, and they’re back to working the case, because Sam’s RIGHT THERE CAS THIS IS NOT THE TIME.
I imagine that’s how most of their phone calls go. In the case of the 11.01 call, I’m also THRILLED that Dean didn’t find it odd that Cas was calling him in the first place. Despite his lingering guilt, he was too worried about Cas, too eager to know where he was and what he was up to and how he was doing to let his guilt hide those feelings, even when he was in full-on Taskmaster Drill Sergeant Handle-The-Mess-We-Made mode. He told Sam they could hash out their personal issues after everyone was safe, but he needed to take a private moment to ensure himself that Cas was holding it together. Marvelous.
