From what I’ve seen most people are like: the sole purpose of having Rudy in this episode is to make the mirror scene no homo. Well, I get where are you coming from but… what if there actually WAS some other purpose? Because now as I think about it, the death of Rudy in Dean’s mind might have been that next time he told Cas about. He looks in the mirror, sees Cas, who isn’t well but is at least alive, and then he sees someone he didn’t even thought about saving, he didn’t hesitate, didn’t even flinch. He sees Rudy and realises it REALLY could have been Cas. It hits him with a great force, that realisation how out of control he really is, if he came this close to killing someone he loves. This is why he doesn’t contact Cas, doesn’t say goodbye. He just can’t risk putting his angel’s life in danger. If he wasn’t planning on killing Sam, he wouldn’t contact him either (note:.he calls him only after his little talk with Death). It could have been shown differently, yes, but I can see the reason behind this and it’s not solely a fuck you to shippers.
Exactly! Rudy’s death wasn’t about Rudy himself. Rudy was a symbol of ‘innocent person that gets killed because of Dean’s condition’. It takes a toll on Dean because there was no reason to get Rudy killed. He had no reason to get Rudy killed. He had no ill against Rudy. And yet he got him killed. And it terrifies him because he realizes that he could get literally anyone killed. He almost killed Cas… and ‘next time’, he figures, he could actually kill him for real. Because if he’s gotten a random acquaintance of his killed for no reason… who knows who else he can get killed. He had just an insignificant little squabble with Rudy, and yet that apparently was enough for him to want him dead. What’s gonna happen if next time he faces a person he’s got a whirlpool of confusing, messy, vaguely scary feelings for?
Yes, the meaning of the mirror scene indeed was ‘that could have been Cas’. It probably would have been more clear if they had shown Rudy first and Cas second (’hey Dean you killed Rudy – hey Dean it could have been Cas instead’), but I guess they went for ‘BAM Dean look how you trashed Cas – you could have killed him like you did with Rudy, you know?’. Dean was feeling guilty about Cas before (that’s why he was drunk in that motel room trying to tell himself he was good…), what’s changed now is that Dean has gotten the proof that he’s indeed able to kill someone he knows just because. And that has a retroactive effect on Dean – ‘oh my god when I said ‘next time won’t miss’ I could have actually meant it’.
This is very much in like with most fanfiction where the two cuddle and Cas lays his hand on the hand on the mark his grace burned
but it’s still not supportive enough to be lifting a grown man.
So look at this
Cas didn’t grab Dean out of hell by his shoulder, he held him close against his chest with one arm while the other hand wielded his angel blade and fought off demons in order to save him from hell
Cas said he gripped you hard a raised you from perdition, and you know what that means?
this wasn’t the first time Cas had done this. Dean had already become dark-souled almost-demon when he brought him from hell, right? So that’s why the ANGEL HUG I LOVE YOU thing worked
tl;dr: stop saying Cas grabbed Dean up by his shoulder and dragged him out of hel – He actually clutched him to his chest and lifted him out in his arms.

Damn! I thought “Brokeback Purgatory” was just a fandom joke about how Purgatory was essentially very similar to Brokeback Mountain (the place, not the movie) insofar as it was “pure” and removed from all the complications of the real world. And very homoerotic.
Cas tells Dean, with no hesitation, that even after Sam and everyone else Dean loves is gone he will still be there and look at that second pic – he actually has tears in his eyes.
You know what I find so interesting about Cas’ words to Dean?
Cas has thought about this… a lot.
He has made a decision that he is never, I repeat, never going to leave Dean’s side.
He has contemplated it, planned it, and firmly resolved that this man standing in front of him, covered in blood and reeking of Lucifer’s curse, is his future by his own choosing. It has been years since heaven gave him any orders regarding the Winchesters, but Castiel, on his own, decided that come what may, he will stay with Dean. And that might mean centuries of trying to stop him from killing his way through Cain’s bloodline, but Castiel is absolutely willing to do this.
He could go live out his says in heaven, enjoying the eternal Tuesday afternoon of the kite flying man and leave Dean to this mess because the Mark of Cain has nothing to do with Cas. This is not his mess to clean up. But instead, Cas declares to Dean that he has thought about and made the decision that Dean is his mission for… well pretty much forever since at this point they are both immortal.
Jesus, how can anyone, at this point, deny that Cas is head over heels…crazy, madly, deeply… please let me stay with you forever… in love with Dean Winchester?
And he stopped because of what Cas said. Cas stopped beating on Dean when Dean said he needed Cas, and Dean stopped beating on Cas when Cas said please. It’s the sequence that makes it a reverse crypt scene. That’s the parallel. Whether it’s abusive or not is irrelevant to the sequence of beating-speech-stop beating. It being abusive is a completely different conversation.
