ME: what if he were horrifically and painfully in love with them, but felt he couldn’t say anything because he’d never break up their marriage, and canonically he’s likely to deflect any expression of honest emotion with a jibe so he could easily be avoiding the subject of how much he cares about them and wants to be a part of their lives
