You know what would make an amazing RPG? Pern. God, I would play the FUCK out of a Pern RPG, where your starter character Impressed a dragon and had to learn to fight Thread, and whether you’d ride a brown or bronze or green or blue or gold would depend on both your character gender and your interactions with the dragons and the other candidates at the beginning of the game, and you levelled up by learning skills like timing it and distributing fire lizards and matchmaking among the Holds and exploring space and doing politics for the MasterHarper, and basically GIVE IT ME NOW, I WANTS IT.

Recently got back into Dragonriders of Pern. How do draw dragons??
I love Sporelett’s dragons.
So the other day I was at my mother-in-law’s house and she said to me, “Hey we found this book while unpacking. I had been using it to prop up trinkets in my curio cabinet. We were just gonna get rid of it and then I thought, ‘Hey! Joey might want this!’”
I took the old (but still in good shape) hardback from her and turned it over to see what it was.
Yeah, no big deal or anything. Anne McCaffery is just the first female ever to win a Nebula Award and the first female to win a Hugo Award in fiction for novellas that are in The Dragonriders of Pern and my mother-in-law has been using it to prob up glass gnomes.
That cover annoys me so much, though. Ramoth and Mnementh look way too dinosaurish about the head and neck, and the harnesses look like they have steering wheels attached to them. And there’s something about their legs being tucked up that irritates me, even if it’s not really wrong.
Things I need right now:
Peter Jackson to get his butt in gear and make the Temeraire movie. Also Dragonriders of Pern movie, yes?
Some more oldies, but I still like them–I even tell myself I might go back and do new colors for them someday… We’ll see. 😉
I wish you’d give me fair warning the next time you rearrange the social and political structure of this planet.
Happy Easter! Another page for the Pern folks!
I’m also negotiating my first book signing event, and I’ll be posting more info on that later when I get the date nailed down. Other than that,
things are going well here—finally some spring sunshine, just hope it
lasts! 🙂
