so what if Sam calls Cas to check in on how the road trip with Metatron is going, and while Cas is trying to tell Sam everything’s fine Metatron starts making a nuisance of himself, acting all juvenile, like asking “are we nearly there yet?” and “I’m hungry can we stop for lunch?” to the point of getting a little bit physical and prodding Cas’ side or shoulder and Cas starts to struggle to hold the phone AND drive AND deal with Metatron’s prodding so he impatiently mutters that he has to go and ends up dropping the phone as he tries to end the call
THEN Metatron starts getting snarky and asking who was on the phone anyway, was it your “boyfriend?” and “god it’s so pathetic how whipped you are, Ass-tiel, such a good little lapdog, ever willing to roll over for Dean…”
at which point Cas loses his patience and yells “ENOUGH!” and skids to the side of the road, turning stony faced to Metatron as soon as he’s parked
and Cas says calmly and matter-of-fact that he knows what Metatron is doing, “you’re attempting to embarrass me, to distract me by making me feel ashamed, in the hope that you will be able to take advantage my vulnerable state and find a way to escape”
Cas goes on to say that this will never work, because “there are many things I am ashamed of, many terrible things I’ve done that I regret immeasurably, but being in love with Dean Winchester is not one of them, in fact it’s the one thing about myself I actually look upon with a sense of pride, so if you dare to imply my feelings for Dean are shameful ever again you can look forward to spending the rest of your mortal life without a tongue!”
from which we cut BACK TO SAM holding his phone in the bunker and staring at it open mouthed – because when Cas dropped the phone he never actually ended the call, meaning Sam heard everything
then maybe Sam starts to say something, to try and let Cas know he’s still on the line… he tries a couple of times, opening and closing his mouth but never quite finding the words, before giving up and ending the call in order to stare into the distance and contemplate Cas’ confession of love for his brother and what to do with the information…
