Visual and Narrative Callbacks to the Supernatural Pilot in Season 11 – Part I of III

i mean i don’t really get what they were trying to do with cas’s story line this season now i’ve seen the whole thing.
everyone’s been saying it already but i thought i’d hold off on being full on bitter (don’t know if i succeeded, probably not) until we saw where they were going and they just were not going anywhere with it at all and had about 6 random shifts in tone. just a really bad piece of writing.
it seemed like they were gonna tell cas that he mattered
since he’s obviously depressed and the lucifer story line was going to bring that about
but in the end they had dean tell him that him risking suicide was a necessary risk and a commendable action which is just a really disgusting message to send out to a fan base who has struggles with mental illness.
I really really didn’t read this scene in that way at all. It wasn’t about Lucifer, or about that decision at all. It was about Cas seeing himself as stupid for making the decision in the first place. What did you want Dean to say? “Yeah, Cas that was really stupid.” and kick the guy when he was already down?
Instead Dean broke pattern. Instead of belittling Cas for the choice he made, he supported him in it, even if it wasn’t a good choice. A complete reversal from the tail-end of season six and the reverberations from that, which arguably led to Cas feeling worthless in Dean’s eyes to begin with. I have friends with mental illness. I have them myself. Agreeing with someone when they say they’re stupid is not the way to go, ever.
Argh, I’m not really sure where I’m going with this, so I’ll just leave it there.
Some thoughts about 11×23
I really like the direction the show seems to be going in. It feels hopeful (?) despite what happened to Sam and Cas. I mean, Dean has his mom back. Nothing can upset me after that.
She said she was bringing him in, so that was probably an incapacitating shot, not a killing one. And Cas bounces back pretty quickly from being banished like that.
I actually kinda like British MOL lady, and I seriously don’t think she’ll stay an antagonist.
Saw some wanky stuff about Cas, and I don’t know about anyone else, but I didn’t read the car conversation as Dean invalidating Cas’ feelings. Cas said letting Lucifer in was stupid, and Dean was very quick to jump in and make sure Cas knew that it wasn’t. That’s… not letting someone you care about insult themselves. That’s letting people you care about make their own decisions, too, and not berating them for it afterwards. I can’t even be upset about the brother thing – it’s Dean trying to show Cas he cares without revealing too much of himself.
And for the record, I really don’t think Mary Winchester will ever be irrelevant on this show.
Also, hah, shout out to my home city – the Winchesters went to Waverly Hills Sanatorium. ❤
His first word is dean.
