LOOK. AT. HIS. FACE.

He looks surprised that he was even thinking about it in the first place.

He looks like he just realised the biggest, most simple truth he’s ever known. Like it’s something so deep and all-consumming that he managed to not notice it for some time, but that’s only because it was there all along. And that makes sense. Because his rebellion from Heaven began with this. This was his biggest motivation to walk into everything that happened afterwards. And it will break through his very nature, because it’s bigger. Stronger. More important. It was the first thing Castiel had ever wanted for his own.

Like everyone else, I’m just waiting for him to say “I need you too”.

Gosh. I’d love if it Cas said that. *melts*

#destiel #this is what we ‘romanticize’ #about this episode #the fact that #every part of him was being manipulated & controlled and changed #to do the will of heaven #to serve #that Castiel had to kill Dean hundreds of times #before Naomi thought she had broken him enough #and it STILL wasn’t enough #all the control of heaven#broken by three words #’i need you’ #because he would set aside all of heaven#rather than hurt this one human (via dubiousculturalartifact)

Intrinsic Vow (from TV Tropes)

A character has something he believes in more than anything. A person he has sworn to protect, an ideal he’s sworn to uphold. He might have spoken that vow in a sacred ceremony, or simply made a decision in the silence of his heart, it doesn’t matter. What matters it that no matter what, he will not break it.

If he’s under More Than Mind Control, attempting to make him break it will cause him to break free of the control instead [NOTE: Lucifer attempted this with Castiel, and it is referenced on this trope page]. If he’s got Laser Guided or Easy Amnesia, he’ll stop in his tracks without knowing why [NOTE: Born-Again Identity, anyone?] – or possibly even remember everything. If he’s in there somewhere, this will enable him to fight [Note: This was played straight in this episode. Like… this episode IS demonstrating this trope, exactly. It is cross-linked to “Power of Love“ in the tropes].

Compelling Voice, Charm Person, Grand Theft Me, Brainwashed and Crazy, it doesn’t matter – that one unbreakable vow will tear through anything.

And that, essentially, is the core of this trope – a character-trait so important to the character that he will break free of outside control or amnesia to keep it.

Simply having a vow will not suffice, if it has not been ‘tested’ in this manner.

Unnervingly, the one way to get a character to break such a vow is to force them to choose between the lesser of two evils, with the greater being keeping the vow [Note: TMWWBK is cited specifically on this page], making it a Frequently-Broken Unbreakable Vow
